Godwin Obaseki-led government in Edo State on Friday said it has constructed more primary water storm culverts, drains and earth storm water channels more than any other government in the history of the state.
DailyMonitorngr reports that the government gave itself the credit during the official launching and unveiling of Edo State Flood, Erosion and Watershed Management Agency (EdoFEWMA) in Benin City.
It said EdoFEWMA,an agency of the state government was established to sustain the gains recorded in erosion control and flood management started under the World Bank-assisted Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project ( NEWMAP).
The government's position, which was contained in a document titled, "How governor Obaseki is building infrastructure, leveraging technology to check flooding, erosion in Edo", said the state government through the NEWMAP has completed 15 major flood and gully erosion sites across the state.
The document explained, that the development brought succour to residents of Gapiona, Oshiobugie-Auchi, and Iguosa.
" Other areas that received government attention include Ekehuan, Ogiso, Urora, Fugar-Agenebode, Ewu, Emu, Ibore, Emu-Orhordua and Queen Ede gullies in Edo State.
It also added that "as part of the NEWMAP programme, the state constructed over 40kilometres of secondary drains to check flooding.
"This excludes over 400kilometres constructed by other ministries and agencies, over 14 kilometres of primary storm water culverts, drains and over 4 kilometres of earth storm water channels.
"This is more than what has been done by any other government in the history of the state",he added.
It further added that the state had also blazed the trail in technology-driven governance with its new engineering design capabilities to accelerate the process of interventions in flood and erosion.
It posited that with the drone capabilities at the engineering design centre, land surveys for engineering designs, which would ordinarily take several weeks or months to do, can now be done in a matter of hours or days.
The document, which stated that the state has today become a model for how development projects can be implemented in a community-centred way, noted that it will ensure the benefits of the project are widely felt sustained.
It further explained that, the Edo NEWMAP also provided alternative livelihoods and employment opportunities for people in the participating sub-catchments whereby grants were availed accredited community associations to implement selected community livelihood enhancing sub projects.
It listed the sub-projects to include Information Communication Technology (ICT), poultry, and fishery among others, all of which fully complement the Obaseki-led government's job creation and employment scheme.
