As part of plans to address post- harvest lost and promote made in Edo products, the Edo State Government has mulled the establishment of monthly farmers' market in the state.

Afie Braimoh, the state commissioner for Business, Trade and Cooperatives made the disclosure in a statement made available to newsmen in Benin City.

Braimoh said the establishment of the farmers' market was to address post-harvest lost as well as to promote made in Edo products.

She opined that the planned farmers' market is one of the strategies by the ministry  to  boost the "Made in Edo" products policy of the state government.

According to her, "by design, the market is expected to stimulate off-takes in such a way that the farmer does not need to bother much about how to dispose off their farm produce because the market is functioning as an exchange and a ready market.

"The farmers market has been on the cards for a long time but recently received accelerated attention as a result of the feedback from members of the public about the rising cost of living and the farmers who often lament about poor sales and off-take for their farm produce.

"Deploying some creativity to the problem, the ministry  mulled the idea of a farmers' market to act as the hub or as the "clearing house", as it obtains in the stock exchange market.

"The farmers' market will principally serve as the major focus of the ministry in 2023. The  whole idea is to find suitable and willing buyers for the farm produce under the ministry's "Farm to the Table" initiative",she said.

The commissioner who disclosed that the farmers' market is scheduled to commence early next month and end on November, 2023, added that it will be holding last Saturday of  every  month at the Edo Production Hub located at Sapele road in Benin.

She further explained that when operational, the monthly Edo farmers market is expected to bring together all the major actors in the marketplace to engage in the transaction of buying and selling which will help to boost the local economy as well as the productive capacities of the various players.

"In addition, the market will also serve as the precursor to the Edo State Trade Exhibition and Expo, slated for the last quarter of 2023.

"The ministry hopes that the monthly farmers' market would have stabilized substantially to be able to generate the required momentum and frenzy during the Expo as well as open huge export channels for the state as a means of foreign exchange earnings and galvanize  investors' interest", she added.
