The management of Edo State College of Nursing Sciences has said that it denied Miss Precious Umoru admission for the 2023/2024 academic session  to study Midwifery due to "unstable gait and tremors".

Dailymonitorngr reports that the Provost of the institution Professor Patricia Ukaigwe gave the reason on Tuesday at a press briefing in Benin City.

Dailymonitorngr also reports that the school clarification was occasioned by  publications in  some social media and online platforms  alleging that the school denied the candidate admission after the payment of tuition fees.

Recall that a post by  Osazee Edigin, in his official Facebook account and other social media platforms,  titled "Edo State College of Nursing Sciences should restore her studentship" raised the alarm that  Precious Umoru's admission was allegedly  withdrew by the school  management because according to them she was not "flexible enough".

According to him, this is a girl that passed through all the screening levels of admission including physical examination and interviews.

"After collecting tuition fees of N335,300 and giving her admission, only to turn around to say she is not "flexible enough" to study.

"She deserved all the necessary support from the school to study as long as she passed through the necessary screening stages", he said.

Briefing the press on the issue, the provost of the institution, Professor Patricia Ukaigwe said the state governor, Godwin Obaseki has ordered the  re-assessment of the candidate by the school management in order to  begin her training at the institution.

Patricia added that the student was admitted at the college, and was initially advised to withdraw after preliminary assessment of her physical condition, which was not disclosed at the point of admission.

"The governor, upon learning of the case, intervened and requested that another assessment be conducted and that Miss Umoru be provided with all necessary support for her condition for the re-assessment exercise.

"The admission committee had deemed her eligible for admission based on her cognitive function and score on the CBT exam, but upon her arrival at the school premises, the hostel manager observed that she had unstable gait and tremors.

"A meeting was called between the counselling department of the College and Miss Umoru’s parents, where the nature and history of her condition were reviewed to reach a fair decision on her physical fitness for the College’s rigorous training.

"As part of this process, a preliminary assessment was conducted which had suggested that she might not be able to withstand the physical rigours of midwifery training", she stated.

While assuring that the college will not intentionally deny anyone an opportunity to get the best training and capacity enhancement in healthcare services, she disclosed that a rescheduled assessment has been slated for Thursday, April 13th, 2023 for her.

She said that the public will be provided with the necessary updates on the rescheduled exercise.
