Alleged Drug Abuse In schools: Delta Govt tackles menace, Commends Saint Augustine's College, Oghara for Its Academic Standard

The Delta State Government  says it has moved into action to stamp out the alleged use of illicit substances across various schools in the state, warning that the state government's zero tolerance for illicit activities especially in the alleged use of drug substances cannot be compromised.

Recall that drug abuse had remained a serious issue affecting many students in schools nationwide, and a problem that can produce severe consequences for the individual abusing drugs including those around them.

But the Delta State Government through the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Augustine  Oghoro said that the state government has set up various Committees to monitor various schools across the state.

Oghoro added that one of the leading causes of drug abuse in school, is peer pressure as students in most cases are pressurized by their peers to try drugs for them to fit into their group.

While commending Saint Augustine's College, Oghara Kingdom as one of the most disciplined and organized schools in academics in Delta State, the Permanent Secretary explained that at the ongoing of  various national examinations, the school managed by catholic missionary, has shown sufficient standard of a good citadel of learning, among others.

He, however, disclosed that the state government will reward schools with good academic standard soon. 

Oghoro said that alcohol and drugs such as marijuana or Opioids, can undermine a child's academic success and other life goals, adding that substance misuse and substance abuse disorders are associated with various negative consequences, including deteriorating relationships, poor school performance, loss of employment, diminished metal health and increased sickness and death.

He appealed to parents to ensure proper oversight functions of their children in schools.

Investigation revealed that Saint Augustine's College, Oghara since its inception, ranks first among others in academics, behavioral, sporting activities, especially basketball with seasoned administrator, Rev fr Immanuel Tugudu as the school had also won many laurels.
