Delta Lawmakers approve N40bn loan to Oborevwori 2 weeks after inauguration

The Delta State House of Assembly has approved N40 billion Credit loan facility to the State Government to defray substantial part of outstanding retirement benefits to local government pensioners.

DailyMonitorngr  reports that the approval of the loan facility from Zenith Bank Plc by the house was sequel to a letter from the State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and addressed to the Speaker of the House, Emomotimi Guwor.

The Governor's letter was read during plenary by the speaker barely two weeks after the 8th State House of Assembly was inaugurated and three days to make a month the Governor was sworn-in.

The Governor took the oath of office on May 29, 2023 while the house was inaugurated on June 13, 2023.

Oborevwori, in the letter, said that the request was in anticipation to help alleviate the plight of senior citizens of the state who served and retired at the local government level.

He added that  Zenith Bank PLC had avail the 25 local government councils the said facility in a prorated manner, in tune with their respective indebtedness to pensioners, for which offer letters had been served to the councils by the bank. 

He also added that  his administration was collaborating with the state chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) to reduce the backlogs of accumulated pensions owed retired primary school teachers and local government employees.

The motion for the approval of the loan was moved by Majority Leader, Emeka Nwaobi, representing Aniocha North Constituency and seconded by Perkins Umukoro, member representing Sapele Constituency.
