Richard Osaro Edosa, lawmaker representing Oredo West constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly on the platform of Labour Party, LP, on Tuesday paid the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations, UTME,  fees for 40 indigents students in the State.

DailyMonitorngr reports that the lawmaker, who is a first timer in the house, said his desire to pay the free UTME enrolment fees for the beneficiaries was to cushion the effects of the economic hardship on parents.

According to him, the rationale for this gesture, is as a  result of the economic reality of the country which is  not friendly as parents are finding it very difficult to cope, and, which  is also having a negative impact on the education of their children.

"If you look at the current economic in our country, you will see that there is an economic downturn. Farmers are frustrated, they can't go to farms, students have beginning to loose interest in their education because there is no funds to sponsor them by their parents.

"Even the ones that are still interested in education, they are under financial distress from their parents. One way to alleviate this suffering is to see how we can help them in this critical stage of their education.

"Because of this, I decided to bridge the gap by wading in at this critical time of the country. I thought, one way to help them in achieving their dreams, is to pay for their UTME forms",he said.

Edosa, who said  the empowerment is beyond political and tribal affiliations, added that it was also extended to Oredo East constituency which is among  the two state constituencies that made up of Oredo Federal Constituency.

He also promised to offer scholarship to students that performed brilliantly in the Examinations.

The Labour Party lawmaker,  urged the beneficiaries to leverage on the opportunity given to them at the moment to be serious with their studies and become useful to themselves and to the society in the future.
