INEC extends CVR by four days, as 120,458 register in Edo, Ondo

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the ongoing  Continuous Voters Registration exercise in Edo and Ondo States by four days.

The commission said the extention is to enable
more eligible persons to register.


Dailymonitorngr reports that the Commission also extended the duration of the exercise from 9 am to  5pm daily.

Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee of the Commission disclosed this on Tuesday in a statement made available to newsmen.

Olumekun, said the decision to extend the CVR exercise was taken in a meeting held on June 4, 2024 to review the ongoing exercise earlier slated to end on Wednesday, June 5, 2024.

He said, the reviewing of the exercise, was occasioned by appeals by stakeholders, that the exercise should be extended to enable more people to register.

The National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, also disclosed that the number of centres have been increased to more than 397 wards in the two States'  offices including all the 36 Local Government offices of the Commission in the States.

He stated that more  machines would also be deployed to areas identified to have peculiar needs such as difficult terrain or communal issues.

"Like the Ward registration centers, detailed information on the names and location addresses of the Local Government Area offices have also been uploaded to our website and social media platforms for the guidance of registrants in the two States", he said.

While noting that the exercise is progressing well in the two states, he added that as at Monday, June 3, 2024, eight days after the commencement of the exercise, a cumulative total of 120,458 new voters have so far registered in the states.

He said out of the figures 55,861 representing 46.4 % are male while 64,597 representing 53.6% are female.

Olumekun also added that majority of the registered voters which was 82,003 representing 68.8% are youths between the ages of 18 and 34.

He said, in terms of occupation 43,419 representing 36.8% are students while 812 representing 0.67% are Persons with Disability
(PWDs).  


The INEC, National Commissioner, who said the statistics are preliminary figures, assured that the final  figures will be published on State by State basis as well as  for all categories of registrants at the end of the exercise, and after data clean-up using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS).

He, however, appealed to eligible voters to take advantage of the extension to register, transfer or correct personal information on their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) as provided by law, as no further extension would be granted by the Commission.
