Ebonyi court remands four over alleged trial by ordeal, ostracizing , banishment of 2 widows, children

Justice Mrs Nnenna Ogodo, the Chief Magistrate of an Abakaliki Magistrate Court has remanded four persons in prison for the alleged justice jungle.


The remanded persons are 
Egwuonwu Jonah, Sunday Obasi, Ogonnaya Eze (Boss) and  Godwin Nwoko-Obi.

A charge sheet with suit number MAB/181c/2025 and made available to newsmen said the accused and others now at large were charged with 10 count.

The charge sheet said the accused and others now at large committed the offences on February 21, 2025 at Mebi-Okpa Okposi Ohaozara, Ebonyi State.

It said the suspects  were charged with conspiracy, attempted murder/acts intended to cause grievous
harm and armed robbery, trial by ordeal and among others on two widows and a man.


Part of the charge sheet read:

"That the accused and others now at large on the said date and place in the aforesaid magisterial district did with intent to maim, disfigure or do some grievous harm, unlawfully subjected their victims to drink contaminated water used in washing the armpit of the corpse of one Innocent Simon (m) got congealed blood mucous from his nose, ground into concoction with native kola nut.


"The accused and others now at large within the jurisdiction of the court unlawfully attempted to kill one Nnenna Donatus Nwinyinya (f) and Jonah Chuku (m) by beating them with sticks, bottles, machetes etc and paraded her half naked around the community barefoot.

"The suspects were also accused of having willfully and unlawfully destroyed five Alumaco windows, two iron doors and one wooden door among others whose values were yet to be estimated, property of one Nnenna Donatus Nwinyinya (f).


"That the accused and others now at large on the same date and place in the aforesaid magisterial district did willfully and unlawfully destroyed chairs, beds, plates, pots, three houses, cartons of beer among others and burnt one Haojue Suzuki motorcycle, values yet to be estimated, property of one Jonah Chuku (m).

"That the accused and others now at large, on the same date and place in the aforesaid Magisterial District did unlawfully direct, control and preside at the trial by ordeal of one Nnenna Donatus Nwinyinya (f) and Jonah Chuku (m) by accusing them of killing one Innocent Simon and subjecting/forcing them to drink the water used in washing the armpit of the deceased, got congealed mucous from his nose, ground into a concoction with native kola nut",it read.


It added that the offences are  punishable under Section 320 (1), section 332(5), section 451 and 
section 208 of the Criminal Code Law Cap. 33 Vol. 1 laws of Ebonyi state of Nigeria 2009 respectively.


Justice Mrs Nnenna Ogodo,  after diligent consideration of the 10 count charge declined jurisdiction over the case. 


She, however, adjourned the case to May 9, 2025  for compliance by the office of the State Director of Public Persecution (DPP).

Plea and applications for bail of the accused were not taken by the court.
