15 years after closure, Gov Okpebholo set to commission revived moribund Edo Line transport with 100 vehicles

Fifteen years after the closure of the Edo State owned transport company known as Edo Line,  Governor Monday Okpebholo has scheduled June 27, 2025, for the commencement of full transport activities by the company.

Dailymonitorngr reports that the company was shut down by the administration of former Governor Adams Oshiomhole following a protest by members of the Almagalmated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Service Employees, AUPCTRE.

The unions had in March 2010, protested against the reappointment of now late Chief Amos Osunbor as the Board Chairman of the Company.

The transport company was over 80 years in existence at the time of its closure. When fully in operation this year it would be over 95 years old.


Dailymonitorngr, however, reported that 15 years after its closure, the Governor Monday Okpebholo has decided to resuscitate the company with the initial procurement of 56 new Toyota Hiace buses for the company.

The buses were commissioned by the governor on 22 Feb 2025 as part of activities to mark his 100 days in office as the elected governor of the State.

At the commissioning the governor noted that  the buses were part of his administration's efforts to improve public transportation and broader plan to acquire 100 buses for the company .





Governor Okpebholo, who  personally assessed the progress at the New Edo Line station on Tuesday, June 10, 2025 disclosed that the transport company would commence full operations on June 27, 2025.

While expressing satisfaction with the preparations, he  assured that ongoing projects at the terminal, including partitioning, CCTV installation, and the control room, would be completed by next week Friday.

"I've just come to look at the work that is going on here, in the New Edo Line station. The vehicles are ready. Everything is set. We are trying to see how we can commence. The idea is to come and look at the level of preparation of our commencement", he said.

Earlier, Oligbe Henshaw, the Managing Director of the Edo State Transport Authority, affirmed the readiness of the terminal. 

"This is the State terminal for the New Edo Line Nigeria Ltd. And by the special grace of God on the 27th of June this year, we shall be commencing operations properly," he  added.

The Governor also inspected some other critical infrastructural projects in the Edo South senatorial district.

Some of the projects included Sapele Road, a major federal artery connecting Edo and Delta States, the Temboga Road and the Palace Road.

Okpebholo who urged the contractors to accelerate work to alleviate persistent traffic congestion, noted that the projects underscored his administration's commitment to improving road networks across the state. 

In his remarks, Li Ou Fu, the CEO of CBC Group, the company handling the Sapele Road project, expressed the company's commitment to completing the immediate concerns section of the road within the next two weeks.
