Dailymonitorngr reports that MonITNG, a non-governmental, non-profit organisation LP and a civil watchdog indicted the governors and deputy, namely Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, now a senator representing Edo North in the National. Assembly, Mr Godwin Obaseki and Hon Philip Shaibu.
MonITNG in a message posted on its official social media platform, X, formerly Twitter, said its team visited the school an LL l
Ppd that what they found was deeply disturbing.
It said it was a clear example of chronic neglect facing public schools, total disrepair of classrooms, broken or missing furniture and unsafe environment for any form of meaningful learning.
It posited that the school which is located just a stone throw from the home of former Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu also lies within the constituency of Senator Adams Oshiomhole, a former governor of the State. .
The group which lamented that the school has been abandoned with no meaningful intervention and renovation noted that there was also no political will to change its condition.
"The school’s principal expressed deep frustration. Most of the classrooms are either collapsing or unusable due to cracked walls and leaking roofs.
"Students sit on broken chairs or bare floors. For years, the staff have been pleading for help, but their voices have gone unheard", it said.
The body also lamented that in spite of the several billions of naira allocated to the education sector by the immediate past government of Godwin Obaseki nothing was done to prioritise schools like Ayua.
"Between 2020 and 2023, Edo State allocated significant funds to the education sector:
▪️2020: ₦16.5bn (Capital ₦4.63bn)
▪️2021: ₦18.5bn (Capital: ₦4.1bn)
▪️2022: ₦24.2bn (Capital ₦13.3bn)
▪️2023: ₦33bn (Capital: ₦19.4bn)
"Despite these figures and donor-backed programmes like EdoBEST, the former administration under Governor Obaseki failed to prioritise schools like Ayua. While millions were spent on policies and publicity, students in Uzairue were left behind", it lamented.
It, however, called on Governor Monday Okpebholo to beam searchlight on dilapidated public schools like that of the Ayua Secondary Commercial school.
According to it, Governor Monday Okpebholo, the people of Etsako West are watching. Ayua Secondary Commercial School urgently needs full renovation. Our children deserve safe, functional schools, not abandoned buildings. It’s time to act.
